A CAIR Texas Presentation...

"A New Civil Rights Movement:

From the Great Tradition to the Cutting Edge of Action for Human Rights"

Featuring Mustafaa Carroll, Executive Director of CAIR Texas

Sunday February 24, 2013 from 2pm to 4pm

Masjid Mu'mineen, 8875 Benning Dr. Houston, TX 77031

This presentation will give a historical synopsis of the African American struggle for freedom and civil rights within the United States. We will examine the civil rights movement (1954-1971) as a source of inspiration and focus on how to build unity and promote activism within our local communities. We will compare the similarities and the differences of this period in U.S. history to the current state of civil rights and civil liberties for Muslims. The presentation will also speak to CAIRs work to enhance the understanding of Islam, encourage dialogue, protect civil liberties, empower American Muslims, and build coalitions that promote justice and mutual understanding. We will present strategies to overcome current civil rights/liberties issues including how to:

  • Be diligent and effective in outreach.
  • Move beyond mere dialogue to effective social and political activism.
  • Encourage unity as an effective tool for combating Islamophobia.

We will present past civil rights struggles as a reminder not to allow momentary setbacks be a detour from the goal of building a strong America that respects the rights of all.
