From time to time, we are always reminded of being better Muslims and Muslima; though, every frightening warning seems to always go in one ear and out the other. The principle of “doing the right thing” has been flustered over the years. What was once known as a random act of kindness has transformed into a competition to accumulate the most deeds in lieu of having authentic intentions to do so. Growing up, I always did the right thing in exchange for rewards my mother used to give me for good behavior; however, these materialistic rewards will only remain for so long.
It is evident that doing the right thing is not easy; though, having sincere intentions to do so is not either. Many of us do good things to attain material, respect, praise, or other similar encouragement from others; rather than doing the right thing by being genuine towards our intentions.
