In just the last twelve months, an additional one million Syrians have become refugees in Lebanon, Jordan, Turkey, Iraq, and Egypt. They face growing hardship in the host countries, yet have little prospect of being able to safely return home. For Lebanon and Jordan, the two countries hosting the highest number of refugees, their receptiveness and support have come at a heavy price. This fallout threatens the stability of surrounding economies and raises serious humanitarian and security concerns.
Mustafa Akyol is a columnist for the Turkish newspapers, Hurriyet Daily News and Star. His articles have also appeared in Foreign Affairs, Newsweek, New York Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, and the Guardian. He is author of Islam Without Extremes: A Muslim Case for Liberty, an argument for 'Muslim liberalism.' Akyol has also written for Al-Monitor, "the Pulse in the Middle East," and appears regularly on Turkish political discussion shows.
