"Look it's on sale!"

But isn't everything these days?

New technology, faster delivery systems, and access to the (invisible) hands of low-cost labor; all translate to a never ending supply of new gadgets, fast-fashion, "cheap" decor, and stuff-to-buy galore.

But as we pile stuff into our homes, tuck trinkets into our closets, and watch new stuff magically replace the old -- are we losing something important along the way?

In our upcoming Grassroot Discussion, Saad Rehman will be leading a conversation on the subject: "Consumerism in the Muslim Community".

Amongst other themes, we'll be addressing the questions:

1) How does your consumption affect your spirituality or participation in society as a Muslim? Do you feel it has an impact?

2) What are the ethical issues associated with the consumer lifestyles of modern life?

3) How do we as individuals "buy into" the idea that the accumulation of material wealth leads to happiness and stability?

4) To what degree do Muslims conform to popular trends in consumerism?

5) How do you understand trends in consumerism in the context of your personal approach to finding peace?
