Asalaam Alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatu,
I'd like to invite you to a special event happening this Tuesday, June 24th from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm.
The evening will feature Rep. Alma Allen of the Texas House of Representatives and Interfaith Leaders from Texas Impact.
The event is focused on a special presentation about reentry. Reentry is the process in which formerly incarcerated people make the transition back into the larger society. As you know this is a tremendously challenging transition and a topic of great importance here in Texas.
While we are the host, the event is organized by Texas Impact (http://texasimpact.org/). They have arranged for Rep. Alma Allen, (http://www.house.state.tx.us/members/member-page/?district=131) to visit our masjid and to speak on the topic. Rep Allen is a member of the Texas House Criminal Justice Committee and long-time advocate for improved support and services for those entering the community after incarceration. Her district (http://www.fyi.legis.state.tx.us/fyiwebdocs/PDF/house/dist131/m1.pdf) is very diverse and has a large Muslim population who live and work in it.
Also on the program, Texas Impact Congregational Outreach Director Scott Atnip and Houston AmeriCorps VISTA Amariee Collins will share information about their new reentry initiative "Reinvested Communities." You'll get practical information about opportunities for you and/or your faith community to be social justice leaders in this import and often ignored area.
Lastly, you will be able to meet and network with dynamic faith leaders from other religions as they visit our Islamic Center.
